Durante los seis años que pasó en Italia (1621–27), Van Dyck fue con frecuencia en la rica ciudad portuaria de Génova, donde pintó algunos de sus retratos más magníficos. Este tamiz se identifica tradicionalmente como miembro de la familia Durazzo, una de varias dinastías pediátricas que dominaban la vida política y cultural genovesa. La cortina roja teatral y la fracción floja del retrato atestiguan la admiración de Van Dyck por la obra del gran pintor veneciano Titian (ca. 1485/90?–1576), cuyas pinturas copiaba regularmente durante sus viajes italianos.
