James Stanley, Lord Strange, Earl de Derby, fue descendido de una antigua familia propietaria de tierras en el norte de Inglaterra que también gobernó la Isla del Hombre. Se casó con Charlotte de La Trémoille, que estaba relacionada con algunos de los defensores aristocráticos más destacados del protestantismo en Europa continental. Ambos jugaron un papel en la causa realista tras el estallido de la guerra civil, y el audífono fue eventualmente decapitado. Aquí, el Señor y la Señora Strange forman un triángulo invertido con una de sus hijas, un arreglo de simplicidad clásica que coexiste con un programa iconográfico alusivo. La isla en el fondo puede representar la Isla del Hombre y el color del vestido de la joven niña su descenso de la Casa de Orange.
