Un artista de asombrosa originalidad, Antonello combina una maestría neotelandesa de descripción con un énfasis italiano en la presentación y expresión formal. Esta pintura puede datar hasta 1470. Para aumentar su función como ayuda a la meditación, Cristo se muestra detrás de un parapeto: una convención Antonello apropiado del retrato. El dispositivo aumenta el efecto de la presencia y el sufrimiento físico de Cristo: "un hombre de dolores y conocido con dolor" (Isaías 53:3).
