En el Libro de Tobit el ángel Raphael fue invocado por Tobit, un hombre justo y pobre, para acompañar a su hijo Tobias para recoger un crédito de diez talentos de plata contratados diez años antes. Durante el viaje Raffaele mostró a Tobias la manera más segura y lo salvó más de una vez, sin revelarse nunca como un ángel, excepto al final de la historia. En la pintura, el ángel ya se ha revelado mostrando sus alas a Tobias que, según la historia bíblica, lleva en su mano el pez que Raphael le había capturado en los Tigris, salvandolo de la mordedura que el animal estaba a punto de dar a su pie.
