Según el biógrafo Giorgio Vasari, Sellaio fue alumno de Filippo Lippi, y varias características de la pintura actual, como los rayos que rodean al Niño Cristo, también son comunes a las pinturas de Lippi del mismo tema. Los terrones de los árboles en el paisaje son una referencia a Mateo 3:10 ("Y ahora también el hacha está puesto a la raíz de los árboles: por lo tanto, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado, y echado en el fuego." La pintura data de finales de los 1480.
