En el proceso de buscar fondos para construir este Village Hall para su pueblo local de Great Totham, Maldon, Essex, Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo descubrió el trabajo de los Consejos Comunitarios Rurales, y participó en la formación de una iniciativa similar para su propia comunidad. The RCCs sought to protect and nurture the close-knit rural communities, in part by providing and maintaining communal space. Este trabajo fue una respuesta a la percibida invasión del desarrollo de ciudades y ciudades cercanas. Great Totham Village Hall fue construido c.1909 y todavía está en uso hoy.
