El arquitecto inglés A.W.N. Pugin diseñó sólo una pequeña cantidad de joyas. Este broche es parte de un conjunto más grande (parure) de joyas en el estilo gótico y el diseño se inspira en la decoración eclesiástica medieval. Pugin lo diseñó para la señora que propuso hacer su tercera esposa. El matrimonio no tuvo lugar, y en 1848 se reunió y se casó con Jane Knill y le dio el perrito. En 1851 apareció el salón completo en la Gran Exposición de Londres como parte de la Corte Medieval.
