Van der Ast perteneció a un grupo cercano de pintores innovadores de vida muerta en la ciudad holandesa de Zeeland, un importante centro para el comercio colonial de la Compañía holandesa de la India Oriental. Fue especialmente conocido por su entrega de conchas, flores e insectos, a menudo arreglado en un estante ilusionista que parece apelar casi tanto al sentido del tacto de la vista. Los insectos que zumban y giran alrededor de la fruta sobreripe animan la superficie de esta pintura bien conservada, guiando al ojo para saltar a través de la composición asimétrica.
