El poema de Ovid Metamorfosis (8 CE), compuesto hace 2000 años, contiene una variedad de historias sobre el tema de las transformaciones mágicas (metamorfosis). Un episodio conocido relata cómo un jabalí salvaje mata a Adonis, un joven amado por Venus. Distraído, la diosa transforma gotas de sangre de su herida en flores de anémona escarlata. Benjamin West reimagina la escena como una tragedia familiar, con el hijo de Venus Cupido tristemente sintiendo el pulso en el cuello de Adonis.
