El tema de la pintura se extrae del libro apócrifo de Tobit, que dice cómo el arcángel Raphael dirigió Tobias para curar la ceguera de su padre con la gall de los peces que había atrapado. Aunque nació en Génova, en 1630 Bernardo Strozzi se trasladó a Venecia, donde se pintó este lienzo. Repitió la composición al menos dos veces, sugiriendo que disfrutaba de algún éxito. El trabajo de Strozzi se caracteriza por una pincelada vibrante y una atención a los detalles de la vida.
