Winterhalter comenzó un retrato oficial de la emperatriz Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo, condesa de Teba, 1826-1920) poco después de su matrimonio en 1853 con Napoleón III, emperador de Francia, pero no fue exhibido hasta 1855. El presente trabajo es, en cambio, relativamente íntimo en escala y efecto. Muestra la emperatriz en una adaptación del Segundo Imperio de un vestido del siglo XVIII. Su interés en el siglo anterior, especialmente su fascinación con Marie Antoinette, reina de Francia de 1774 a 1793, está bien documentado.
