En un nivel la pintura es una pieza de género diseñada para demostrar la capacidad del artista de representar todo desde la piel del niño a la piel de un melocotón, desde los pliegues de la bata hasta el tejido de la cesta. También note la sombra a lo largo de la pared posterior; Caravaggio probablemente está pintando la sombra de él y su lienzo. El análisis indica que Caravaggio está siendo realista, en capturar sólo lo que estaba en la cesta de frutas; no idealiza ni su maduración ni su arreglo.
