Caravaggio (1571-1610) pintó dos versiones de la Cabeza de Medusa. La primera en 1596 y la otra presumiblemente en 1597/8. La primera versión también conocida como Murtula, debido al poeta que escribió sobre ella (48x55 cm) está firmada Michel A F, (Michel Angelo Fecit) y fue encontrada en el estudio del pintor sólo después de su muerte. Actualmente pertenece a una colección privada mientras que la segunda versión, ligeramente más grande (60 x 55 cm) no está firmada y está en la Galería Uffizi, en Florencia.
