El teólogo protestante Karl Reinthaler, que fundó el Martinsstift en Erfurt en 1821, quería promover una vida familiar armoniosa. El Stift estaba situado dentro del antiguo monasterio agustino donde Martin Luther había vivido y se utilizaba para criar niños pobres.
