En algún momento de su historia, este retrato de un hombre desconocido adquirió la firma y fecha que aparecen en el fondo correcto: "Goya 1780". El deslumbrante, no completamente halagador, acercamiento al sitter evoca al pintor español Francisco Goya (1746-1828), pero el manejo de este retrato no es nada como Goya. Gaspare Traversi (ca. 1722-1770) ha sido propuesto como su autor, aunque esto no es universalmente aceptado.
