En 1888, Filiger se trasladó a Pont-Aven, donde conoció a Gauguin y a sus amigos en la Pensión Gloanec. Abandonó un estilo naturalista para los principios del sintetismo y, como un ilustrador de imágenes populares, comenzó a crear pequeñas escenas en gouache que él llamó “iluminaciones pequeñas” y que son comúnmente conocidas como Notations chromatiques (Notas del Color). Representan alrededor de un tercio de sus obras y representan paisajes o escenas religiosas ambientadas en Le Pouldu. La influencia del Japonismo es evidente en este paisaje bretón, particularmente en el árbol inclinado.
