En su inmediatez y superficie vivaz, esta pequeña pintura recuerda dibujos que Claude creó de la naturaleza en las colinas fuera de Roma. Es único entre sus composiciones en que representa un edificio existente en lugar de uno tomado de su imaginación. El edificio, que todavía se encuentra, fue una fortaleza medieval transformada en una casa de campo que perteneció a la familia aristocrática Crescenzi. Esta pintura subraya la fina línea entre lo que artistas como Poussin y Claude encontraron fuera de Roma y cómo lo filtraron a través de una lente histórica.
