Biografía del artista:Col John W. Thomason, USMC, fue capitán durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Como artista, utilizó sus habilidades para pintar ejemplos representativos de soldados alemanes usando tres tipos de engranajes de cabeza. Estas creaciones de tempera-y-ink-on-paper sirvieron para dos propósitos. Primero, tenía objetivos a los que disparar y, segundo, reconocería más fácilmente al enemigo.
