Nacido en Delft, Mijtens o Mytens, se habían asentado en Londres en 1618. Se convirtió en pintor de la corte para James I en 1621 y también ocupó el título bajo Charles I (1600-1649), hasta 1634, por el cual Anthony van Dyck fue restablecido en Inglaterra. Esta es la versión principal, 1629 de un tipo de retrato real de longitud completa estándar, con pintura de cortina fina y detallada y ajustes menores a diversos contornos realizados por el artista.
