En el mito clásico Proserpine fue secuestrado por Plutón, el dios del inframundo, para ser su esposa. Pidió que volvieran a la tierra, pero porque había comido semillas granadas Plutón la confinaba a su reino durante la mitad de cada año. Se muestra aquí comiendo una granada que simboliza cautiverio. Jane Morris modeló para Proserpine. Ella estaba casada con Dante Gabriel Rossetti
