Scheffer se hizo especialmente conocido como pintor del Faust de Goethe, un drama contemporáneo con raíces en una historia del siglo XVI. El interés de Scheffer en la historia de Faust se remonta a 1825, y entre 1831 y 1858 pintó ocho composiciones principales con temas de Faust, la mayoría de ellos episodios centrándose en Marguerite. El tema de Faust y Marguerite en el jardín de su vecina Martha que mira con Mephistopheles viene de la primera parte del Faust de Goethe. La marguerita exquisitamente pintada, hermosa e inocente, tiene un torso finamente modelado, exudiendo una sensualidad sinuosa de la que parece inconsciente. Faust, decidido a seducirla y transformado por la magia de Mephistopheles en una juventud apuesto, coloca su cabeza cerca de ella mientras trae consigo su seducción y su ruina final.
