En esta escena, las impresiones baratas y anticuadas, litografías coloreadas del pintor de la flor Pierre-Joseph Redouté, se unen con un caballo de dinastía Tang de moda y telas japonesas clavadas en el tablero de anuncios para tipificar a un coleccionista anticuado, acumulando obsesivamente una variedad de obras de arte. La representación de los individuos, interrumpida en tareas en medio de escenarios que revelan pistas sobre su carácter, fue desarrollada por Degas en numerosas pinturas de figuras de los años 1860 y principios de 1870.
