Este es el último de una serie de mujeres planchando que Degas había comenzado a principios de los años 1870. Las fotos de desvío de Degas paralelo a su más famosa serie de bailarines de ballet. Para ambos, estudió los movimientos precisos de mujeres en el trabajo. Con su enfoque ‘Naturalista’, describe temas comúnmente considerados vulgares – se percibía como prostitutas fronterizas. La mujer aquí parece fuerte y digna. Degas también ha enfatizado los efectos estéticos de la pintura. Una combinación de rosa-rojo y verde ayuda a intensificar los colores. La figura de la mujer delineada y recortada revela las deudas de Degas al arte japonés y la fotografía instantánea.
