Prellwitz nació en South Orange, Nueva Jersey a una familia socialmente prominente. Su padre era un hombre de negocios prominente y su madre era la hija de Almet Reed, uno de los fundadores del ferrocarril central de Nueva York. Para 20 años de edad, estaba bien interpretada en filosofía y conocía francés y alemán. Entre 1889 y 1891, asistió brevemente a la Académie Julian donde estudió con William-Adolphe Bouguereau y Joseph-Nicolas Robert-Fleury. Prellwitz volvió a Nueva York en 1891 y durante el próximo decenio logró notoriedad por sus composiciones de figuras etéreas basadas en temas literarios.
