Las pinturas representan la leyenda de la Bella Durmiente, también llamada Briar Rose. De izquierda a derecha, muestran al príncipe descubriendo caballeros rivales; el rey y los cortesanos; y la princesa y sus asistentes. Las figuras en reposo despertarán sólo cuando el héroe besa a su amado. Muchas de las poses difuminan la línea entre el sueño y la muerte, subrayando la quietud de su sueño encantado. Burne-Jones vinculó las escenas a través del repetido motivo de rosas overgrown. Sus tendriles ondulantes recuerdan los diseños textiles y fondos de pantalla de su amigo y colaborador William Morris. Estas imágenes se han convertido en la serie Small Briar Rose, para distinguirlas de dos ciclos de pintura más grandes y posteriores por el artista sobre el mismo tema.
