Alrededor de 1803, Edward Savage se propuso grabar una impresión que representaba la firma de la Declaración de la Independencia, pero el plato permaneció inacabado a su muerte unos catorce años después. Figuras completas incluyen en el escenario central-John Adams de Massachusetts, Roger Sherman de Connecticut, James Wilson de Pennsylvania, y Thomas Jefferson de Virginia, entregando un documento a John Hancock de Massachusetts, presidente del Congreso. Situado en el frente (izquierda a derecha) son Samuel Adams de Massachusetts, Robert Morris de Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin de Pensilvania (en la silla Windsor), y Charles Carroll de Carrollton, Maryland, quien, cuando murió en 1832, fue el último autor sobreviviente. A la derecha está Stephen Hopkins de Rhode Island, usando, de acuerdo con la práctica de Quaker, su sombrero.
