Un Charleston, nativo de Carolina del Sur, Edwin Augustus Harleston fue graduado del prestigioso Instituto Normal de Avery en Charleston y la Universidad de Atlanta. En Atlanta estudió sociología bajo el renombrado académico Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, y en 1905 Harleston fue aceptado a la Universidad de Harvard para continuar su educación artística liberal. Sin embargo, cuando llegó a Boston cambió de opinión, y en cambio, decidió asistir a la escuela de arte en el Museo de Bellas Artes, Boston.
