Un alfarero de Kioto con estrechos lazos con el literati en su ciudad y un gusto similar para los estilos chinos, Hozen fue conocido por sus guerras de gran color y por su uso de oro. Un lado diferente de su urbanidad viene a través de esta pintura bastante personal, tal vez templado por las fallas de negocio que experimentó en sus años posteriores. Algunas pinceladas económicas crean la figura de un zorro-priest, el protagonista en el cómic kyōgen play The Fox Trapper (Kirigitsune). El poema enigmático advierte: Cuidado con aquellos que han renunciado al mundo aunque llevan las túnicas del corazón de los sacerdotes, todavía son zorros.
