Shuvalov (1727-1797) había sido un paramor imperial, el amante de la emperatriz Isabel II de Rusia. Uno de los intelectuales más destacados de Rusia durante la Ilustración, promovió el desarrollo de las artes y ciencias. Según Vigée Le Brun, “Combinó modales cortéses con la cortesía, y como era un buen hombre, fue buscado por la mejor sociedad”. Este retrato simpático fue probablemente pintado póstumamente.
