En la Exposición Universal de 1889, Emile Gallé hizo conocer al poeta Robert de Montesquiou. Los dos hombres estaban muy cerca hasta un día fatídico en junio de 1897 cuando se embrollaron en una de las peleas que habitualmente pusieron fin a las amistades con el conteo muy conmovedor. Mientras tanto, a principios de 1893, Gallé había dado Montesquiou Mysterious Grapes. Como Montesquiou le había preguntado por qué, Gallé escribió:
