Durante una carrera de cincuenta años que incluyó la formación temprana con Samuel F. B. Morse, Field se convirtió en uno de los pintores itinerantes más exitosos en el antebello Nueva Inglaterra y el estado de Nueva York. Desarrolló un repertorio de fórmulas compositivos para representar las características y el entorno de sus sitters, que pertenecían a la clase media rural emergente.
