Ravilious fue empleado como artista oficial de guerra en 1940, primero con el Almirantazgo y luego con el RAF. Sus viajes lo llevaron a Noruega, Escocia, Hertfordshire, Yorkshire y, finalmente, a Islandia en agosto de 1942, donde fue denunciado desaparecido durante una misión de rescate aéreo. Este acuarela captura el brillo de su patrón, orden y luz. Se trata de una imagen que juega en contrastes: el interior sombreado, ordenado y el amplio paisaje lumínico, la cubierta de la cama y el aeroplano tipo juguete. Ravilious tenía una fascinación particular con los planos de mar de Walrus:
