La primera comunión marca la iniciación del niño en la Eucaristía cristiana, el consumo ritual del pan y el vino consagrados. La paleta muda de Carrière, el cepillo de fluidos y las formas simplificadas ofrecen un aspecto ajeno a la chica, envuelta en su vestido y velo de comunión blanca. Esta pintura y varios otros sobre el mismo tema se han asociado con un tríptico religioso que el artista creó alrededor de 1897 (ubicación actual desconocida).
