Esta pintura vigorosa se basa en un dibujo Delacroix realizado en 1854, durante una visita de una semana a la finca de un primo en Augerville, a unos cincuenta kilómetros al sur de París. Refiriéndose al dibujo en su entrada del diario del 27 de mayo, el artista mencionó hacer "sketches of the fantastic figures in the rocks", y aprobó una frase favorita: "No desvíes nada que pudiera hacerte grande". Probablemente hizo la pintura después de regresar a París.
