Un artista francés influenciado por ukiyo-e, arte budista y escultura románica. Mediante contornos de corte claro y colores divididos planamente, Gauguin fusionó imágenes ricamente implicativas con ornamentación y es conocido como artista representativo del simbolismo y el sintetismo en Francia a finales del siglo XIX. En sus años posteriores, abandonó Europa para Tahiti y creó obras que cuestionan profundamente el significado de la existencia humana.
