Verboeckhoven fue un importante pintor ganadero del siglo XIX que se especializó en ganado. En este punto de vista, revertía la escala típica de la figura al suelo, dando lugar a uno de sus raros paisajes puros. (Un par diminutivo de ciervo aparece en el centro inferior.) Tal vez se inspiró en el paisaje del bosque de Ardenas, que el artista visitó en los años 1820.
