Charles Baudelaire fue el primero en señalar, en 1859, que Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) tenía en su taller “Cientos de estudios pasteles improvisados ante el mar y el cielo”, describiéndolos como “la magia prodigífica del aire y del agua”. Ese mismo año, el compañero artista Gustave Courbet, pintando a su lado, exclamó: «Dios mío, eres un serafín, Boudin! Usted es el único de nosotros que realmente conoce el cielo!
