Los primeros decoyos de aves norteamericanos fueron tallados por los nativos americanos. Creado por Shinnecock Indian Eugene Cuffee (1866-1941), esta forma única de heron decoy y su diseño de plumas pintadas se conecta a una tradición que precede a la llegada europea al East End de Long Island. Cuffee era un guía de caza y pintor de casa, principalmente activo en Southampton; sus decoys están marcados por su plumaje distintivamente elaborado.
