Esta pintura fue creada después de la muerte de Valentine Godé-Darel el 25 de enero de 1915 en Vevey (ver su retrato de 1912, inv. 1133). Dos estudios de color (propiedad privada; Ferdinand Hodler, exh. cat. Zurich/Berlin, Nationalgalerie/Paris, Musée du Petit Palais 1983, no 176 f., color ills. p. 393 f.) se consideran etapas preliminares. En su teoría del paralelismo, Hodler asocia la horizontal con la muerte, en cuya gran unidad toda la vida regresa.
