Al minimizar los indicadores de profundidad, Khnopff transformó el estante que apoya el jarrón en una franja abstracta de azul contra un fondo carmesí. El abanico japonés y los colores pálidos rosa, crema y azul indican la admiración del artista por el estilo innovador de James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). La obra de Whistler fue bien conocida entre la vanguardia artística en Bélgica, habiendo sido mostrada con la sociedad de exposiciones radical Les XX en Bruselas, que Khnopff ayudó a encontrar.
