Ravier fue influenciado inicialmente por la tradición de Barbizon, pero mientras maduraba, su trabajo se volvió cada vez más subjetivo y expresivo. Este dibujo altamente trabajado representa el paisaje alrededor de Morestel, cerca del artista Lyon natal. En lugar de centrarse en campos cultivados de la región, Ravier prefirió estanques aislados, bosques y llanuras que transmiten un sentido conmovedor de su soledad y desprendimiento del mundo del arte parisino. Las acuarelas de Ravier fueron cuidadosamente consideradas estudios, destilaciones de experiencias recordadas en la naturaleza. En su escritura, Ravier habló de cómo los paisajes más bellos de todos eran aquellos en sus sueños.
