Granet hizo numerosos bocetos de Monte Mario del Cerro Pincian, el sitio de la Villa Medici, que se convirtió en la sede de la Academia Francesa en Roma en 1803. Este ejemplo fue pintado durante el breve período después de la puesta de sol cuando queda suficiente luz del día para percibir el color, y podría haber sido completado en tan poco como veinte minutos. Casi todos los estudios de aceite del artista están en el Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence; éste fue heredado por su alumno Baptistin Martin (1818-1901) y descendió en su familia.
