El Booker T. Washington y Andrew Carnegie —ambos sentados en el centro— encapsulan gran parte de América del siglo XIX. Ambos eran hombres auto-hecha: Carnegie era un inmigrante que construyó un imperio manufacturero y amasó enorme riqueza; Washington era un antiguo esclavo que se convirtió en un líder afroamericano durante uno de los períodos más duros de las relaciones raciales americanas. Carnegie determinó que el objetivo final de la riqueza era mejorar la sociedad; Washington fundó Tuskegee Institute para permitir que su pueblo hiciera progresos económicos.
