Este retrato familiar fue probablemente pintado para celebrar la novela de Richardson, Pamela (o Virtue Rewarded). Publicado en 1740, Pamela fue una serie de cartas que trazaban las pruebas y tribulaciones de una doncella defendiendo su virtud de los avances de su empleador. Trajo el éxito de Richardson durante la noche y pasó por cinco ediciones en su primer año. Richardson está sentado aquí con su segunda familia y un amigo, después de su trágico primer matrimonio había terminado con la muerte de su esposa y seis hijos.
