Nacido en Baltimore, Smith era casi totalmente un artista autodidacta principalmente conocido por sus paisajes e ilustraciones. Tenía una carrera multifacética como ingeniero, artista, autor y orador. Después de la Guerra Civil, trabajó como ingeniero naval, pero para 1880, se volvió a pintar a tiempo completo. Era especialmente conocido por su carbón y acuarelas que a menudo aparecían en sus libros de viaje.
