En 1627, aunque todavía residente en Llerena, Zurbarán pintó esta espectacular imagen, que lo hizo famoso, para los dominicos. Fue colocado en una pequeña capilla oratoria y dio una fuerte impresión. El drama representado en la composición se incrementa por la luz sobrepoderosa, que aumenta entonces transforma lo real en superreal, expresando así la naturaleza dual de Cristo.
