Peeckelhaering - Pickelherring in the English tradition - es un personaje de stock que se encuentra en el cómic de la mayoría de los países europeos. Con una taza o un cisterna en la mano izquierda, el hombre mira al espectador, su cabeza inclinada y su expresión un poco perezosa, una evocación humorística del vicio de la intemperancia. El maquillaje oscuro en la cara indica que el pintor está representando a un actor en el papel de Peeckelhaering, y el rojo y amarillo del traje había de hecho desde que el siglo XVI se asociaba con el bufón.
