El título de esta pintura se refiere a la épica medieval de Dante Alighieri de un viaje por el infierno. Aunque Stuck empleó símbolos tradicionales del inframundo —una serpiente, un demonio y un foso ardiente— los colores disonantes y poses estilizadas y exageradas son sorprendentemente modernos. Él diseñó el marco complementario. Las imágenes de Stuck probablemente se inspiraron en las Puertas del Infierno de Auguste Rodin, en particular la figura del Pensador (ver obras relacionadas cercanas). Cuando Inferno debutó en una exposición de arte alemán contemporáneo en The Met en 1909, los críticos elogiaron su "sovereign brutality". La imagen reforzó la reputación de Stuck como artista visionario sin temor a explorar el lado oscuro de la psique.
