Wagner comenzó sus estudios en la Academia de Pennsylvania de las Bellas Artes bajo Thomas Eakins y Thomas Anshutz a principios de 1880. Al igual que muchos de sus colegas de Nueva Esperanza, el artista prefirió pintar en el aire plein, especialmente escenas de invierno y especializados en ferrocarril y vistas al canal, como esta obra. En 1913, Wagner exhibió dos obras en el histórico Salón Armario de Nueva York que introdujo a los estadounidenses a las tendencias del modernismo europeo.
