Para ampliar sus colecciones, el Museo de Etnología Hamburgo contribuyó a la financiación del primer viaje de Leo Frobenius a África (1904-1906). En enero de 1906, Georg Thilenius, director del museo, recurrió a la autoridad educativa con una solicitud de financiación adicional: En lugar de los 2.000 objetos esperados, 4.600 ya habían llegado al museo.
